Thanks for visiting! I am an associate professor of philosophy at Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA. Here, you'll find links to papers I've published. For all published papers, please cite the publication source. For any unpublished papers, please email me prior to citing anything. I also have some things up at my Academia page, at ResearchGate, and also under the "Research" tab. Also I have work up on my Github repository.
I have three main areas of research.
1. Philosophy of mind
I work with Joe Vukov on metaphysics of mind. We develop a view on causal powers in mind that can do a lot of cool work in philosophy of psychology. In particular, I'm interested in a metaphysics of mind that gives pride of place to cultural influences on cognition. The bigger picture for this is working on 4E cognition, and I'm co-authoring a book with Aaron Kagan on embodied cognition.
2. Social epistemology
I've worked on implicit racial biases a bit. These days, I'm interested in what agent-based modeling and data analysis can tell us about believers in groups and about group belief. Some of my work has been on the population-level effects of dogmatism. More recently, I'm working with Bert Baumgaertner on modeling reflective equilibrium. I also have a longstanding interest in recognizing expertise. I'm collaborating with Sarah Bro Trasmundi on a special issue for Social Epistemology on interactivity, semiotics, and expertise.
3. Job market analysis
This is in the blog section. I look at how many jobs are available throughout the year, peaks and valleys in demands for AOS's, and try to collect from departments how many people are applying for jobs. You can find the data and code for my analyses under Blog Data.
I have a wonderful spouse and two incredible children with whom I enjoy gardening. I'm also an amateur (stress: amateur) bread-baker and weight-lifter. Let me know if you're ever up for gabbing about sourdough or powerlifting programming.
Here's a current (July 2023) CV.
